Educational Offerings in Marion County Education is a priority to Marion County residents. Through quality public and private schools available in the area, students receive the guidance and instruction they need to succeed in both the classroom and beyond. There are 11 public schools in the area that serve more than 4,500 students. The Columbia School District has four schools encompassing nearly 2,000 students. Three of the schools in the district have achieved Level 4 status with the Mississippi Department of Education, and Columbia Primary School is rated at a Level 5, meaning exemplary. The Marion County School District, divided into East Marion and West Marion zones, includes more than 2,500 students in its seven schools. The teacher-student ratio in the district is 1:15, which is lower than the state average, meaning more students get the one-on-one attention they need to excel. Columbia Academy, a private Christian school in Marion County, serves nearly 500 students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grades. The school is accredited through the Mississippi Private School Association and prides itself on providing a safe, spiritual and family-oriented learning environment for students. In the non-traditional education arena, Marion County is home to the Carl Loftin Career Center and Technology Center, one of the top vo-tech centers in Mississippi offering a multitude of vocational and technical classes for public high school students. Marion County is also a short drive from several higher education facilities, including the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, William Carey University, Pearl River Community College and Antonelli College.
